# 10x20 inground pool: size, cost and what it looks like

Updated 2026-10-11.

A 10x20 inground pool is 200 square feet of water with 60 feet of edge, and holds about 6,700 gallons at a 4.5 foot average depth. It is 2.5 fence panels long, and 10x20 is the average small pool in one pool maker's guide. The pool alone runs $20,000 to $50,000 at national planning rates.

## A 10x20 is 200 square feet: 2.5 fence panels long and a little over one wide

Ten feet wide and twenty long is the average small inground pool in one pool maker's guide. Twenty feet is two and a half standard eight foot fence panels, and the width is just over one. One pool maker's guide to small pools calls anything of 600 square feet or less small and gives 10x20 as the average, which puts a 10x20 at a third of that ceiling.

The picture is an AI concept image of a 12x24 with a deck all round, the closest size we have pictured. A 12x24 holds about 44 percent more water than a 10x20, so read the yard around it and allow for a shorter, narrower pool. For true proportions use the scale plan on this page.

Length is where a 10x20 gives ground. The same pool maker describes lap-focused small pools as 20 to 28 feet long and says laps need four to five feet of depth, so a 10x20 sits at the bottom of that range: room for a few strokes and a turn, not a place to train.

## A 10x20 suits a couple or a small family in a tight yard, and the yard is the real limit

One California pool builder's size guide says pools from 10x20 to 12x24 work in yards where space is limited, and suit couples or small families who want a pool without it dominating the landscape. It also expects lower excavation costs in that range, which is a reason small pools appeal on a tight budget as well as a tight lot.

The quarter-of-the-yard rule from one pool maker puts a 10x20 in a yard of about 800 square feet. The same California guide recommends at least 6 feet of clear space all round the water, which turns the footprint into 22 by 32 feet, or 704 square feet. On a yard that small the two rules pull against each other, so measure the lawn and ask your town about setbacks before you fix a size.

Pool guides list steps, a built-in bench, lights and a spillway among the things small pools can carry. A diving board is not one of them: one guide says a board needs at least 8 feet of depth, and a small pool is usually no more than 5 or 6 feet deep. See [small yard pool ideas](https://rendersplash.com/pool-ideas/feature/small-yard) for designs built around a tight lot, and the [small inground pools guide](https://rendersplash.com/pool-sizes/small-inground-pools) for the sizes either side of this one.

## A 10x20 is priced by the job as much as by the foot, so the low end is a floor

At published per-square-foot rates a 10x20 comes out below the floor we apply to a small concrete pool, so the low end of the planning range is that floor, the floor we apply to a small concrete pool, set from the low end of a plunge pool cost guide. A very small pool is priced by the job, not by the foot.

The table prices the pool alone, then coping, a four foot deck border and a fence, so you can see which lines a quote includes. It leaves out permits, engineering, a heater and a cover. Real quotes vary with your town, soil and access, so treat the range as a list of questions, not a prediction. The [cost page](https://rendersplash.com/inground-pool-cost#line-items) lists the same lines for any size, and [what it costs to run](https://rendersplash.com/inground-pool-cost#running-cost) a pool each year.

If a 10x20 feels tight, the next step is a [12x20](https://rendersplash.com/pool-sizes/12x20), which keeps the length and adds two feet of width, or a [12x24](https://rendersplash.com/pool-sizes/12x24) at 288 square feet. We re-read the two size guides this page leans on on October 11, 2026.

## What a 10x20 inground pool costs, line by line

| Line | Planning range | How it is worked out |
|---|---|---|
| The pool | $20,000 to $50,000 | 200 sq ft of water at $90 to $250 a square foot (shell, excavation, plumbing, equipment, plaster). |
| Coping | $500 to $3,500 | 60 linear ft of water edge at $6 to $55 a foot, from plain concrete to travertine. |
| A 4 ft deck border all round | $1,000 to $24,000 | 304 sq ft at $3 to $80 a square foot installed, from pavers to composite decking. |
| Aluminum pool fence around that deck | $1,500 to $3,000 | 92 linear ft at $15 to $35 a foot installed. |
| All of the above, if your quote includes it | $20,000 to $85,000 | Rounded |

## Questions people ask

**How many gallons is a 10x20 pool?** About 6,700 gallons at a 4.5 foot average depth, or 6,000 to 7,500 at 4 to 5 feet. One California builder's guide gives 10,000 to 12,000 gallons for the whole 10x20 to 12x24 range without stating a depth, so its figure sits above ours for the smallest size.

**Is a 10x20 inground pool big enough?** For cooling off, sitting and a few strokes, yes. It gives 200 square feet of water, which one California builder's guide says suits couples or small families. It is short for lap swimming. Mark it out on the lawn, and if the yard allows, mark a [12x20](https://rendersplash.com/pool-sizes/12x20) beside it.

**How much does a 10x20 inground pool cost?** The pool alone comes to $20,000 to $50,000 at national planning rates, and with coping, a four foot deck border and a fence the range reaches $20,000 to $85,000. The low end is the floor we apply to a small concrete pool. Ask local builders for itemised written quotes. See [inground pool cost, line by line](https://rendersplash.com/inground-pool-cost#line-items).

**How much yard does a 10x20 pool need?** By the quarter-of-the-yard rule, about 800 square feet. With 6 feet of clear space all round, as one California guide recommends, the footprint is 704 square feet. Setbacks vary by town, so ask your building department.
