# 14x28 inground pool: size, cost and what it looks like

Updated 2026-10-10.

A 14x28 inground pool is 392 square feet of water with 84 feet of edge, and holds about 13,200 gallons at a 4.5 foot average depth. It sits at the small end of the 14x28 to 16x32 range that one California pool builder's size guide calls average. The pool alone runs $35,000 to $100,000 at national planning rates.

## A 14x28 is where the family size range starts

The 14x28 is the bottom of the 14 by 28 to 16 by 32 foot band that one California pool builder's size guide calls average. It is 3.5 fence panels long and 1.8 wide. Put next to a 12x24 it adds 104 square feet of water, which is a different pool once you have kids and friends in it at the same time.

We do not have a picture drawn at exactly 14 by 28 yet. The one above is a 15 by 30 in a farmhouse yard, the closest size we have pictured: it is a little larger than a 14x28, by about 15 percent in water area, so read the yard around it and allow for a slightly smaller pool.

## A 14x28 gives a shelf and a swim, if the yard can spare the space

One pool maker suggests keeping a pool to no more than about a quarter of the yard, and by that rule a 14x28 suits a yard of about 1,550 square feet. That is the room the pool, a deck border, a seating area and a little planting all have to share, so count the usable yard after the house, the driveway and your town's setbacks are taken out.

A [sun shelf](https://rendersplash.com/pool-features#sun-shelf), a set of steps and a few strokes of swimming can all fit here, if the builder confirms the layout. Twenty-eight feet is enough length for short laps, and fourteen feet of width leaves room to have a shallow ledge down one side and still keep a clear lane.

A 14x28 is comfortable for roughly 4 to 6 people, says one California pool builder's size guide. That is one builder's rule of thumb, so the [people table in the guide](https://rendersplash.com/pool-sizes/what-size-pool-do-i-need#how-many-people) shows it next to the guide's own per-swimmer figure.

The cost of the extra size is mostly the cost of more water and more edge. The deck border, the coping and the fence all scale with the perimeter, which is 84 feet here. A plain rectangle is the simplest edge to price; curves and extra corners add coping and tile per foot.

## What a 14x28 costs depends on how much of the yard you count

The table below prices the pool at published per-square-foot rates and then adds the lines a quote should itemise: coping, a four foot deck border and a pool fence. Each line shows its quantity and its rate, so you can swap in your own numbers. Rather than lean on one published headline figure for a 14x28, we show the arithmetic. The [cost page](https://rendersplash.com/inground-pool-cost#line-items) explains each line and where the published guides disagree.

## What a 14x28 inground pool costs, line by line

| Line | Planning range | How it is worked out |
|---|---|---|
| The pool | $35,000 to $98,000 | 392 sq ft of water at $90 to $250 a square foot (shell, excavation, plumbing, equipment, plaster). |
| Coping | $500 to $4,500 | 84 linear ft of water edge at $6 to $55 a foot, from plain concrete to travertine. |
| A 4 ft deck border all round | $1,000 to $32,000 | 400 sq ft at $3 to $80 a square foot installed, from pavers to composite decking. |
| Aluminum pool fence around that deck | $1,500 to $4,000 | 116 linear ft at $15 to $35 a foot installed. |
| All of the above, if your quote includes it | $35,000 to $140,000 | Rounded |

## Questions people ask

**How many gallons is a 14x28 pool?** About 13,200 gallons at a 4.5 foot average depth, or 11,700 to 14,700 gallons if the average is 4 to 5 feet. Pool Research gives the formula: length times width times average depth times 7.5.

**Is 14x28 a common inground pool size?** It is a common size. One California pool builder's size guide gives 14x28 to 16x32 feet as the range it calls average, and a 14x28 is the bottom of that band. Vinyl liner pools are often sold at 16x32, 18x36 and 20x40.

**How much does a 14x28 inground pool cost?** At national planning rates, the pool alone comes to $35,000 to $100,000, and the full set of lines on this page reaches $35,000 to $140,000. That is a range from published guides, not a quote; your town and your yard move it. See [what adds cost](https://rendersplash.com/inground-pool-cost#what-adds-cost).
