# 18x36 inground pool: size, cost and what it looks like

Updated 2026-10-11.

An 18x36 inground pool is 648 square feet of water with 108 feet of edge, and holds about 21,800 gallons at a 4.5 foot average depth. It is 4.5 fence panels long, and one builder's guide says pools this size and up suit larger properties. The pool alone runs $58,000 to $162,000 at national planning rates.

## An 18x36 is 648 square feet, 27 percent more water than a 16x32

Eighteen by thirty-six is the step between a family pool and a pool for a large lot. It is 4.5 fence panels long and 2.3 wide, and next to a 16x32 it adds 136 square feet of water and about 4,600 gallons. A 20x40 is 23 percent more water again.

The AI concept image above is an 18x36 range pool drawn as a freeform shape with rounded ends at dusk, with a raised spa and a row of wall fountains. It is a mood, not a measured drawing, and a plain rectangle of this size looks different, so use the scale plan on this page for true proportions.

Depth changes the gallons as much as the outline does. One California builder's guide gives about 25,000 gallons for an 18x36, which works out to an average depth near five feet, where our figure assumes 4.5. Ask for the depth profile as well as the outline.

## An 18x36 needs a yard of about 2,600 square feet, with walking room all round

One pool maker suggests keeping a pool to no more than about a quarter of the yard, which puts an 18x36 in a yard of about 2,600 square feet. Add the 6 feet of clear space all round that a California builder's guide recommends and the footprint is 1,440 square feet of yard before any deck, seating or planting beyond it.

That guide says pools of 18x36 and above are suited to larger properties, and that installation and maintenance costs increase significantly at that scale. It says an 18x36 supports more swimmers comfortably. It also lists 18x36 among the three sizes most common for vinyl liner pools, with 16x32 and 20x40, which are fixed sizes. A concrete pool can be drawn to any size, so an 18x36 is a choice, not a limit.

Use the planner to put the outline on your own yard and see the distance to each fence and the house. Setbacks, easements and fence rules differ by town, and they often decide the size before budget does.

## An 18x36 has room for a shelf and a spa, and 108 feet of edge to pay for

At 648 square feet ask your builder whether a wide [sun shelf](https://rendersplash.com/pool-features#sun-shelf) or a [spa](https://rendersplash.com/pool-features#spa) fits alongside real swimming length. Each one comes out of the same yard and adds to the bill, so decide the extras before you decide the size.

Coping, the deck border and the fence all scale with the edge, which is 108 feet here against 96 for a 16x32 and 120 for a 20x40. The table prices the pool alone and then each of those lines at published rates, so you can see which a quote includes. Permits, engineering, a heater and a cover are left out.

A larger pool also costs more to run: more water to heat and balance, and a larger cover. The yearly figures are on the [running cost section](https://rendersplash.com/inground-pool-cost#running-cost) of the cost page. We re-read the size guides this page leans on on October 11, 2026.
