# Small inground pools: sizes, cost and what fits

Updated 2026-10-11.

One pool maker calls an inground pool of 600 square feet or less small, and gives 10x20 as the average. This page covers the four sizes under half that: 8x16, 10x20, 12x20 and 12x24, from 128 to 288 square feet of water, with gallons, a planning cost, who each suits and the yard each needs.

| Size (ft) | Water surface | Edge | Gallons | Pool alone, planning | Yard at a quarter | Footprint with clear space |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 8 x 16 | 128 sq ft | 48 ft | 4,300 | $20,000 to $40,000 | 500 sq ft | 560 sq ft (6 ft all round) |
| [10 x 20](https://rendersplash.com/pool-sizes/10x20) | 200 sq ft | 60 ft | 6,700 | $20,000 to $50,000 | 800 sq ft | 704 sq ft (6 ft all round) |
| [12 x 20](https://rendersplash.com/pool-sizes/12x20) | 240 sq ft | 64 ft | 8,100 | $22,000 to $60,000 | 950 sq ft | 768 sq ft (6 ft all round) |
| [12 x 24](https://rendersplash.com/pool-sizes/12x24) | 288 sq ft | 72 ft | 9,700 | $26,000 to $72,000 | 1,150 sq ft | 864 sq ft (6 ft all round) |

## Small means 600 square feet or less, and the four sizes here are all under half of that

One pool maker's guide defines a small pool as 600 square feet of water or less and lists typical small pools from 8x24 to 14x28, with 10x20 as the average. By that count even a 14x28, at 392 square feet, is small. The table covers the four smallest sizes that have a place on our chart, from a plunge to a 12x24. The picture above is an AI concept image of a 12x24.

One California builder's size guide groups 10x20 to 12x24 as the sizes that work where yard space is limited, and suit couples or small families who want a pool that does not dominate the landscape. A plunge pool at 8x16 sits below that, built for cooling off and not for swimming.

## Pick by use: soaking needs about three feet, a few strokes need length, and laps need four to five feet

Use sets the shape before the yard does. The pool maker's guide says floating or soaking needs about three feet of depth, and lap swimming needs four to five feet with a length of 20 to 28 feet for a lap-focused small pool. That puts a 10x20 and a 12x20 at the short end of laps and a 12x24 a little further in.

One California guide puts plunge and cocktail pools at 10x16 to 12x20, and the pool maker's guide shows a cocktail pool of 10x16 about four feet deep. The California guide describes plunge pools as 6 to 8 feet wide and 10 to 20 feet long, four to five and a half feet deep and not made for lap swimming. A kidney shape is possible too: one pool maker's guide gives about 10x20 as the smallest kidney it generally recommends.

If the goal is to sit in the water and cool off, read about a [cocktail pool](https://rendersplash.com/pool-features#cocktail-pool) and browse [plunge pool ideas](https://rendersplash.com/pool-ideas/feature/plunge-pool). If a few strokes matter, look at the [10x20](https://rendersplash.com/pool-sizes/10x20) and [12x20](https://rendersplash.com/pool-sizes/12x20) pages, or step up to a [12x24](https://rendersplash.com/pool-sizes/12x24).

## A small pool can still carry steps, a bench, lights and a spillway, but not a diving board

Pool guides list lights, steps, tanning ledges, built-in benches, waterfalls, streams and spillways among the features small pools carry, and a spillover [spa](https://rendersplash.com/pool-features#spa) where there is room. A small cocktail pool in the guide has benches on three sides and steps on the fourth. Each feature takes water area or edge, so pick the one or two that matter.

A diving board is the exception. The guide says a board needs at least 8 feet of depth, and a small pool is usually no more than 5 or 6 feet deep, so it is generally not practical. Never dive into water whose depth you have not confirmed with your builder.

## A small pool still needs yard: about a quarter of it, plus six feet of walking room

One pool maker suggests keeping a pool to no more than about a quarter of the yard, and advises building no larger than a 12x24 on a lawn of 1,200 square feet or less. The California guide recommends at least 6 feet of clear space all round the pool for walking, seating and equipment access, and notes that on a narrow city lot, rear setbacks and easements usually limit the size before budget does.

The table below works both rules for each size. The yard column is the quarter rule; the footprint column is the water plus 6 feet on every side. Where the footprint is close to the whole yard, the rules pull against each other and your town's setbacks decide. Your building department has the real numbers.

## A small pool is priced by the job, so the low end of its range is a floor

At published per-square-foot rates the smallest pools come out under the floor we apply to a small concrete pool, so the low end of the chart's range is that floor, the floor we apply to a small concrete pool, set from the low end of a plunge pool cost guide. Above it, cost follows water area, and each size page lists the coping, deck border and fence on top.

One California guide expects lower excavation costs for pools in this range. The ranges are planning numbers at national rates, not quotes, and your town and soil move them. See [inground pool cost, line by line](https://rendersplash.com/inground-pool-cost#line-items) for every line a quote should carry. We re-read the size guides this page leans on on October 11, 2026.

## Questions people ask

**How much does a small inground pool cost?** At national planning rates the pool alone runs $20,000 to $50,000 for a 10x20 and $26,000 to $72,000 for a 12x24. That is a planning range, not a quote. Coping, deck and fence come on top, and your town moves all of it. See [inground pool cost, line by line](https://rendersplash.com/inground-pool-cost#line-items).

**What is the smallest inground pool you can build?** Plunge and cocktail pools go smaller than the 8x16 on our chart: a California builder's guide gives plunge pools as 6 to 8 feet wide and 10 to 20 feet long. For a pool you can swim a few strokes in, the guides start near 10x20.

**How many gallons is a small inground pool?** A 10x20 holds about 6,700 gallons and a 12x24 about 9,700 at a 4.5 foot average depth. Depth moves the figure, so published numbers differ; see the [size chart](https://rendersplash.com/pool-sizes#chart).

**Can you swim laps in a small inground pool?** A few strokes, yes. One pool maker puts lap-focused small pools at 20 to 28 feet long and four to five feet deep, so a 10x20 or 12x20 is at the short end. Compare it with a [12x24](https://rendersplash.com/pool-sizes/12x24) and the [guide to choosing a size](https://rendersplash.com/pool-sizes/what-size-pool-do-i-need).

**How much yard does a small pool need?** One pool maker suggests keeping a pool to about a quarter of the yard, so a 10x20 suits a yard of about 800 square feet and a 12x24 about 1,150. A California builder's guide also recommends 6 feet of clear space all round. Ask your town about setbacks.
