Inground pool sizes

Inground pool sizes: chart, gallons and what each one looks like

A common family range for an inground pool is 14x28 to 16x32 feet, which one California pool builder's size guide calls average. A 16x32 is 512 square feet and holds about 17,200 gallons at a 4.5 foot average depth; a 12x24 is 288 square feet and about 9,700 gallons. Here is every common size, computed, with a scale view and a planning cost.

Will it fit?

A planner draws any size on your yard, to scale

Set your yard, drop in the house and any tree or shed, and pick a size. The plan is drawn to scale and tells you if it fits.

The planner draws a rectangular yard and judges a pool by the box around its outline, so a curved pool can read tighter than it is. L-shaped lots, fences and gates are not drawn.

A 15 x 30 fits, with 1 ft to spare on the tighter side.

Press Tab to move between the pool and the things in the yard. Arrow keys move the selected item half a foot, Shift for two feet. R turns the pool 90 degrees, and the bracket keys turn it 15. Delete removes an obstacle. Plus and minus zoom.

$40,000 to $120,000

A planning range from published sources, not a quote. Pool, coping, deck, priced nationally. Permits and engineering, land work, landscaping, fencing and lighting are not in it.

How we worked this out
  • The pool$41,000 to $113,000

450 sq ft of water at $90 to $250 a square foot (shell, excavation, plumbing, equipment, plaster).

  • Coping$500 to $1,000

    90 linear ft at $6 to $12 a foot.

  • Deck$1,000 to $2,500

350 sq ft at $3 to $7 a square foot installed.

HomeAdvisor's installed figure. Fixr's $6 to $8 is materials only.

Regional factor 1.00, from state price levels, halved so a pricey state does not double the pool.

A common family range is 14x28 to 16x32

Length times width gives the water surface, and surface times average depth times 7.48 gives gallons. Every row below uses a 4.5 foot average depth, our assumption: size guides give a shallow end of 3 to 4 feet and a deep end of 5 to 6. The last columns are planning ranges for the pool alone, at national rates.

Here is every size at the same scale

Each outline is drawn from the same corner, so you can see how much one size adds to the next. The faint ticks along the edge are standard 8 foot fence panels.

Outlines, smallest to largest: 12x24, 14x28, 15x30, 16x32, 18x36, 20x40. Every outline starts at the same corner and is drawn to scale. The ticks on the top and left edges are 8 ft fence panels.

Pool dimensions are length, width and depth, and depth is the number most guides leave out

A pool size such as 16x32 is the length and width of the water, in feet. It does not include the coping or the deck. Two pools of the same outline can hold very different amounts of water, because depth moves the gallons as much as length or width does, and it is the number most guides leave unsaid.

That is why published gallon figures for one size disagree. A 12x24 holds about 8,600 gallons at a 4 foot average depth and about 10,800 at 5 feet, a difference of thousands of gallons, and the pool is the same. We state the depth we assume so you can check the arithmetic.

How many people a pool suits has no standard answer. The people table in the guide shows one builder's figures.

Extras take space too. A sun shelf, a cocktail pool or a spa comes out of the same yard, and a small yard can still hold a good pool.

Depth also changes how a pool can be used. Diving needs far more depth than swimming. Ask your builder and your town what depth a board requires, and never dive into water whose depth you have not confirmed.

Every picture is an AI concept image prompted for a size range, and some show freeform pools with rounded ends. They set a mood; they are not photographs of built pools and are not measured to scale, so use the scale plans for real proportions.

What size costs: the water area sets the pool line, and the extras set the rest

A pool is priced mostly by the area of water, so each step up the chart adds a predictable amount to the pool line. The chart above shows that line at published per-square-foot rates. The deck, coping, fence and finishes come on top, and each size page itemises them.

Published prices for a single size disagree by a factor of two or more, because they price different pool types and count different things. The 12x24 page lays two of them side by side.

For the whole bill, the inground pool cost page lists every line a quote should carry, concrete, fiberglass and vinyl side by side, and what a pool costs to run each year.

Questions people ask

What is a good size for an inground pool?

A common family range is 14x28 to 16x32 feet, which one California pool builder's size guide calls average. A 14x28 is 392 square feet and a 16x32 is 512. See the 14x28 and 16x32 pages.

How many gallons is a 12x24 pool?

About 9,700 gallons at a 4.5 foot average depth. At a 4 foot average it is about 8,600 and at 5 feet about 10,800, which is why published figures differ. See the 12x24 page.

How do you calculate the gallons in a rectangular pool?

Multiply length by width by average depth, all in feet, then by 7.5 (we use 7.48 gallons to the cubic foot). Average depth is the shallow end plus the deep end, divided by two.

Is a 15x30 pool a good size?

For most families, yes. A 15x30 is 450 square feet of water and about 15,100 gallons at a 4.5 foot average depth, the middle of the 14x28 to 16x32 range. It needs a yard of about 1,800 square feet if the pool is to stay near a quarter of it. See the 15x30 page.

What size pool do I need for a family of four?

A common starting range is 14x28 to 16x32, but the yard sets the ceiling. One pool maker suggests keeping a pool to no more than about a quarter of the yard. Read the guide to choosing a size and mark the outline on your lawn before you decide.

Is a 12x24 pool small?

For a couple or a family with young kids, yes: it is 288 square feet of water. It is short for lap swimming, so if your yard allows, mark the next size up on the lawn and compare. See 12x24 against 15x30 drawn to one scale.

What are the standard sizes of swimming pools?

The chart lists 8x16, 10x20, 12x24, 14x28, 15x30, 16x32, 18x36, 20x40 and 10x40 feet. Vinyl liner pools are often sold at 16x32, 18x36 and 20x40, and a concrete pool can be built to almost any size.

Are the prices on this page a quote?

No. They are planning ranges worked out from published cost guides, collected in October 2026, at national rates. Your town and your yard move them, so ask local builders for itemised written quotes. For the lines a quote should carry, see inground pool cost, line by line.

What does a pool cost to run each year?

Size moves the yearly bill, because a bigger pool holds more water to heat, balance and top up. The published yearly figures, and what each one counts, are on the running cost section of the cost page.
